We love gluhwein and trying a local delicacy at a Christmas market! It is one of our favorite holiday traditions and we are so happy these are taking place in 2021 again

We will keep updating this post with new info and with new places we visit. Might be a good idea to save it for later 😉

The below info on Covid measures at each Christmas market are accurate at the time of writing. As the sanitary crisis is continuously evolving, please verify before going to avoid any surprises. Germany

Germany is undoubtedly THE place to be in Christmas!

In Germany there are corona measures at a federal level and at a state level. You can find a more about each state’s regulations here.
Update: If you are planning to stay in Germany more than 24 hours, children from high risk areas need to quarantine for 5 days

Aachen

One of our favorite Christmas markets, we keep going every year!

*When: 19.11-23.12.2021
*Where: around the town hall and the Cathedral. Markt, 52062 Aachen, Germany
*Cost: Free entrance

*Covid regulations: the market is accessible with Covid Safe Ticket 2G (geimpft oder genesen, ie vaccinated or recovered) and you need to wear a mask. Tests are not accepted. Kids that are up to 15 years old included are exempt. Kids older than 16 need to have a negative test. There is a testing center at the market for EUR 15 per test for kids only, as adults need to be vaccinated or recovered to access the Christmas market. Monschau

NOT TAKING PLACE IN 2021!!
This tiny Christmas market is one of the most romantic in the area!

*When: The Christmas market of Monschau will not happen in 2021. An alternative is proposed under the motto “Shine of lights and moments of pleasure” by the “Monschau Christmas city”
*Where: Monschau
*Cost: Free entrance
*There will be no carousell and no stalls at the central square this year
*For the Christmas market, when it takes place: You can only park at specific places and take the shuttle to the Christmas market. See the map for parking places here
*Covid regulations: all restaurants and hotels are accessible with proof of vaccination or with proof of recovery or negative test, but this might change (info from Tourism Office). Kids under 12 are exempt. Kids older than 12 need to test. Covid measures follow the sanitary crisis and might change rapidly. Please verify before going. Cologne

Well-known for its Christmas market in front of the Cathedral, Cologne never disappoints

Dusseldorf

Stroll around Altstadt and go from one market to the other with a gluhwein in your hand!

*Where: There are 7 (!) Christmas markets in Dusseldorf
*Carousel, ice rink, Ferris wheel
*Cost: Free entrance
*Covid regulations:accessible with proof of vaccination or proof of recovery only (2G regel, geimpft oder genesen – 2G rule, vaccinated or recovered). Berlin Gendarmenmarkt

Weihnachtszauber means Christmas magic

*Where: Gendarmenmarkt, 10117 Berlin, Germany
*Cost: EUR 1 for 12+ years old. Free Monday-Friday 11.00-14.00 and for kids 12-

Berlin Weihnachtsmarkt an der Gedächtniskirche

A very small Christmas market, but worth having a gluhwein there after the Berlin Zoo!

The Christkindl Christmas market in Salzburg looks like it came straight out of a fairytale!

There is an ice skating rink right next to the Christmas market too!

The Vienna Christmas Dream lives up to its name: an impressive Christmas market that you will not forget!

*Where: Rathausplatz, 1010 Vienna, Austria
*There is a Ferris wheel and a carousell
*Cost: Free entrance
*Covid regulations: only accessible with proof of vaccination or with proof of recovery (2G system, geimpft or genesen, ie vaccinated or recovered) for restaurants, hotels, and more. You can move freely around the public space, but when you approach a market stall to buy something, you are considered a market visitor and you need to show proof of vaccination of proof of recovery even to buy packaged food. This is easily one of the best Christmas markets for families we’ve ever been to! A Ferris wheel, carousels, dancing Christmas trees, a gorgeous ice rink and more fun rides for kids!!
