  • Average Temperature in April: 67° F
  • Popular Spring festivals: Dare Days Festival, beginning of June, Manteo, North Carolina

The Outer Banks are a series of long islands on the Atlantic coast of North Carolina. The town of Kitty Hawk on the northern end of the banks is where the Wright Brothers first flew.

Besides their place in aviation history, the Outer Banks are an outdoor lovers’ paradise. You’ll have the sprawling beaches of Cape Hatteras and the dunes of Nags Head. Rent surfboards, 4x4s, or kayaks to explore the scenery or simply lounge on the beach.

Accommodation is affordable throughout the Outer Banks. For most beach-front hotels and short-term rentals, you’ll pay less than $100 a night. You’ll also miss the summer crowds starting in June.

  • Wright Brothers National Memorial: Entry is $10 per person, and the visitor center has exhibits on the first flight. Walk up Big Kill Devil Hill for the best views of the monument and surrounding area.
  • Jockey’s Ridge State Park: This free park features the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast. Try hang gliding lessons with Kitty Hawk Kites or hike to the top for sunset views over the Sound.
  • Ocracoke Island Ferry: The free ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke takes about an hour. Bring your car or bike to explore the quiet island, known for wild ponies and uncrowded beaches.

  • Average Temperature in April: 60° F
  • Popular Spring Festivals: Earth Day, Flagstaff, AZ, mid-April

The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most impressive geologic wonders. It’s over a mile deep in some places and up to 18 miles wide at its widest point.

Spring is one of the best times to visit the national park because of the wildflower blooms. In spring, hundreds of flowering plants burst into bloom, turning the entire canyon into a kaleidoscope of colors.

The average temperature in the South Rim of the canyon is around 60° F. Late spring and early summer is the driest time of the year. Besides wildflowers and sunshine, spring is an affordable time for accommodation because it’s outside of the peak summer season.

  • Grand Canyon Entry Fee: A 7-day park pass costs $35 per vehicle. If you plan to visit multiple national parks, consider the $80 America the Beautiful Pass for unlimited entry.
  • South Kaibab Trail: For a short but scenic hike, the 1.8-mile round-trip to Ooh Aah Point offers breathtaking canyon views. Start early to avoid crowds and bring plenty of water—there’s no shade.
  • Desert View Drive: This 23-mile scenic route has fewer crowds than Grand Canyon Village. Stop at Desert View Watchtower for panoramic views and a glimpse into Native American history.
