Located approximately 35 minutes from Amsterdam, these world-famous gardens span over 79 acres (32 hectares) and contain over seven million flowers. Spring is the best time to visit, especially between mid-April and early May, because the tulips are at their peak bloom.

Understandably, this is also one of the most popular times to visit Keukenhof Gardens, dubbed the “Garden of Europe.” That said, we recommend visiting early to beat the crowds. In spring, visitors can also enjoy several events and shows in Keukenhof.

Highlights include the Rose Show, which runs at the beginning of April, and the Easter at Keukenhof event, during which the Easter Bunny visits the gardens.

Ticket Savings Tip: If you plan to visit multiple attractions in the Netherlands, consider buying a combination ticket. Many offer discounts for bundled tickets, including transport options.
Cafe ‘t Hoff van Holland: After exploring the gardens, I recommend stopping by this quaint café just a short drive away in Lisse. They have excellent Dutch pancakes and coffee—a perfect treat to recharge.
Bike Rentals: Keukenhof is surrounded by scenic bike routes through the Dutch countryside. Renting a bike to explore the area can be a delightful experience. There are rental services available near the gardens.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, Ireland’s vibrant capital, is one of Europe’s most entertaining spring destinations. Admittedly, Dublin is always an exciting place to visit because there’s always something going on. For example, you can enjoy a refreshing pint of Guinness on a tour of the Guinness Storehouse year-round.

However, the city truly comes to life around March 17th, when Ireland celebrates St. Patrick’s Day. This traditional celebration sees Dublin’s streets transform into party central. Expect grand parades, people dressed in traditional costumes, and wild parties.

Dublin tries to host “the Greenest, Grandest Parade” every year. From Dublin, you can also easily access the Wild Atlantic Way, a 1,553-mile (2,500-kilometer) tourism trail along Ireland’s breathtaking coastlines.

Queen of Tarts: This charming café on Cow’s Lane is a must-visit for a delightful breakfast or afternoon tea. Their pastries and tarts are divine. It’s usually busy, so I suggest getting there early to snag a table.
Kilmainham Gaol: This former prison-turned-museum offers guided tours for about €8 ($8.31). It’s a fascinating yet haunting experience, giving you a glimpse into Ireland’s turbulent past. Be sure to book in advance, as the tours tend to fill up quickly.

North Coast 500, Scotland

The North Coast 500 in Scotland is one of Europe’s best spring road trip destinations. For those who don’t know, the North Coast 500, or NC500, is a 516-mile (830-kilometer) road trip route that starts and ends in Inverness. Spring is the best time to drive along this route for several reasons.

First, the weather is more pleasant than winter, so you can expect better driving conditions. Second, roads are quieter than in the summer. Third, and most importantly, the flowers and trees that line the road are in bloom.

Therefore, as you travel along the NC500, you can expect dazzling displays of wildflowers, lush forests, and scenic rolling hill landscapes. Highlights along the route include the Falls of Shin, Corrieshalloch Gorge, and Lael Forest Garden.

Bealach na Bà: This is one of the highest roads in the UK and offers spectacular views, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The road is single-track with hairpin bends and steep gradients. If you’re comfortable with challenging drives, it’s a must-do. Just be sure to drive carefully and consider the weather conditions.
Dunrobin Castle: This fairy-tale castle near Golspie is open from April to October. The entry fee is around £13.50 ($16.77). The castle’s gardens are beautiful in spring, and the falconry displays are fascinating. Make sure to check the schedule in advance.
Kylesku Bridge: This iconic bridge offers stunning views of the surrounding lochs and mountains. There’s a parking area where you can stop and take in the scenery. It’s a great spot for a picnic or a quick photo stop.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, is one of Europe’s warmest spring destinations. You can expect average highs of 72°F (22°C) in April, perfect for relaxing at the beach or by the pool. Speaking of, Playa de las Teresitas is one of the island’s best beaches.

This one-mile (1.6-kilometer) beach offers a glorious stretch of white sand and emerald waters, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. It also has plenty of bars and restaurants to grab something to eat and drink. In spring, Tenerife also hosts various traditional events and festivals.

On the last Sunday of April, you can experience Romería de San Marcos in Tegueste. This traditional event is celebrated with processions, blessings, concerts, and dances.

Teide National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is home to Spain’s highest peak, Mount Teide. Entry to the park is free, but if you want to take the cable car to the summit, it costs around €23 ($24). Book your tickets in advance, as they sell out quickly.
La Laguna Market: Held every Saturday morning, this vibrant market in San Cristóbal de La Laguna offers a delightful mix of local produce, crafts, and food stalls. It’s a great spot to pick up souvenirs or enjoy a bite of authentic Canarian cuisine.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

This world-famous tourist destination is located in the Julian Alps of the Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia, near the charming town of Bled. Bled Castle: Perched on a cliff overlooking the lake, Bled Castle is a must-visit. The entry fee is around €18 ($18.69). The views from the castle are spectacular, and there’s a museum that provides insight into the castle’s history. The café on site is perfect for a relaxing drink with a view.
Rowing to Bled Island: Renting a traditional wooden boat, known as a pletna, to row to Bled Island is a unique experience. Once on the island, don’t miss ringing the Wishing Bell in the Church of the Assumption—it’s a local tradition.

In spring, Amsterdam’s canals are lined with vibrant tulips, adding more allure to an already gorgeous location. Founded in 1889, this museum studies the life and work of famed composer Ludwig van Beethoven. The main highlight is Beethoven’s birthplace at Bonngasse 20. However, there is arguably something more exciting to see in Bonn in spring.

From late March to April, the 60+ cherry blossom trees on Cherry Blossom Avenue explode with color. This 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) street is the location of the Bonn Cherry Blossom Festival, which features live music, flea markets, and cherry blossom cocktails.

Bonn Minster: One of Germany’s oldest churches, Bonn Minster is a beautiful Romanesque basilica with stunning architecture. The entry is free, and it’s a peaceful place to reflect and admire the intricate details. Don’t miss the crypt, which dates back to the 11th century.
Rhein in Flammen (Rhine in Flames): If you happen to be in Bonn during this festival, typically held in May, you’re in for a treat. Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is one of Italy’s best spring beach destinations. Spring is an excellent time to visit the island because the weather is warm enough for outdoor activities and swimming. There are also fewer crowds than in the summer.

Furthermore, the island’s landscapes bloom, revealing gorgeous displays of daffodils, tulips, white lilies, and daisies. From March to April, over 500,000 tulip bulbs from 70 varieties are on display in Beranu Froriu Park, Turru, during the tulip festival.

If you’d prefer to soak up the sun and relax on the beach, head to Cala Brandinchi, one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches. Known as “Little Tahiti,” this beach offers soft white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Nuraghe Su Nuraxi: This UNESCO World Heritage site in Barumini is an ancient Nuragic archaeological site that dates back to the Bronze Age. Guided tours are available and offer fascinating insights into Sardinia’s ancient history. Be sure to book in advance.
Alghero Old Town: This charming town on the northwest coast of Sardinia is perfect for a leisurely stroll. The cobbled streets are lined with historic buildings, shops, and cafés. Make sure to try the seafood at one of the local restaurants—it’s some of the best on the island.
Grotta di Nettuno: Located near Alghero, Neptune’s Grotto is a stunning sea cave accessible by boat or by a steep staircase called the Escala del Cabirol (Goat’s Steps). The cave is filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, making it a must-see natural wonder.

Athens, the capital of Greece, is one of Europe’s most interesting spring destinations. Like many European destinations, spring is an excellent time to visit Athens because it’s the shoulder season. Therefore, you can expect fewer crowds.

Cooler temperatures of 68°F (20°C) also make exploring the city much more comfortable. You’ll find it much easier to walk up Mount Lycabettus in search of the best city views. Of course, you’ll also appreciate smaller crowds at the Acropolis, covered in red poppies between May and June.

At the Japanese Garden, flower enthusiasts can also enjoy spring blooms, including cherry blossoms. You can also experience Athens’ Easter celebrations in spring, including church services at the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea, fireworks, and candle-lit processions.

Ancient Agora: This historic site was once the heart of ancient Athens. The entry fee is about €10 ($10). The Agora is less crowded in the early morning, and it’s an incredible spot to explore ruins and learn about ancient Greek history. Don’t miss the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples.
Central Market (Varvakeios Agora): This bustling market is a great place to experience local Athenian life. It’s open Monday to Saturday from early morning until late afternoon. You can find a variety of fresh produce, meats, and seafood. It’s also an excellent spot to try traditional Greek street food.
Anafiotika: Nestled under the Acropolis, this charming neighborhood is like stepping into a Greek island in the middle of the city. With its narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses, it’s a lovely area for a peaceful stroll. Grab a coffee at one of the local cafés and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

Paris, France

Paris, France’s iconic capital, is a must-visit European destination in spring. For starters, travelers can expect fewer crowds than in the summer, which usually means more affordable travel costs. You’ll also be treated to milder weather and gorgeous spring blooms.

For example, Jardins du Trocadéro explodes with colorful cherry blossoms, and the trees and gardens lining the Champs-Élysées bloom in mid-April. As you can imagine, this makes walking around the city even more magical.

Imagine taking photographs of the Eiffel Tower surrounded by cherry blossoms at Jardins du Trocadéro. You can also find breathtaking displays of blooming daffodils and tulips in Jardin du Luxembourg and Tuileries Garden.

In spring, you can also enjoy the Parisian Easter celebrations, including an enormous Easter egg hunt in Parc André Citroën.

Musée d’Orsay: For a more relaxed museum experience, head to the Musée d’Orsay, housed in a stunning former railway station. The entry fee is about €16 ($16.61). It’s less crowded in the morning, so I recommend getting there early. Don’t miss the impressionist masterpieces by Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh.
Rue Mouffetard Market: This bustling street market in the Latin Quarter is a food lover’s paradise. Open every day except Monday, it’s perfect for sampling fresh produce, cheese, and pastries. Visit on a Saturday morning for the liveliest atmosphere.
Le Marais District: This historic district is brimming with charming boutiques, art galleries, and cafés. Make sure to stop by L’As du Fallafel on Rue des Rosiers for what many say is the best falafel in Paris. Be prepared to queue, but it’s well worth the wait!

Oslo, Norway
