The must-visit cities in Japan offer a unique combination of ancient traditions and modern innovation. After living in Japan for four years, I’ve explored some of the very best. From the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the historic temples of Kyoto and the culinary wonders of Osaka, these cities capture the essence of Japan.

Based on personal experiences and careful exploration, here’s a list of the must-visit cities in Japan that will leave you in awe of this incredible country.

Tokyo

Tokyo is Japan’s fast-paced capital city and one of the world’s greatest cities on all levels. Its nightlife, cuisine, shopping, cultural attractions, and endless excitement make it stand out.

Besides its highlights, Tokyo is a complex yet inviting travel destination. People are friendly, and you can simply explore it on your own. When you give in to it, Tokyo will show you its many beautiful sides.

Come to the city with a packed itinerary of sights such as Tokyo Tower, Sensō-ji, and the Meiji Jingu. Then, leave the other half of your trip to stumble onto things on your own. Most of all, leave a lot of space in your stomach for the best food of your life!

Kyoto

Kyoto is the country’s ancient capital and one of the top cities to visit in Japan. If you love history and culture, this is the place to experience them. The downside is that it’s experiencing a period of overtourism.

However, it’s still worth the long lines and crowds. You’ll see ancient temples such as Kiyomizu-dera and Kinkaku-ji. On top of that, you can take part in limitless cultural activities such as tea ceremonies and bonsai.

Beyond the sights is the city’s cuisine, which revolves around fresh vegetables and locally foraged plants and herbs. Also, if you love nature, Kyoto’s mountains offer some of the best hiking in the country.

Kagoshima

Kagoshima may not be the most famous city, but it’s my favorite for me. Where else can you see an active volcano erupt every day and experience hot springs, castles, and friendly vibes?

The city is located in Japan’s south, so prepare for the heat. Nearby are subtropical beaches and some of the most stunning hikes and viewpoints you can imagine.

The city itself has a rich food culture and offers plenty of cultural activities. It’s also great for just strolling around and sampling the food. And when the sun goes down, it becomes an exciting hub of nightlife you won’t want to miss.

Sapporo

Sapporo is the largest city in Hokkaido and one of the coldest destinations in the country. It offers world-class skiing and some of the best snow in the world. The city also has a popular ice festival called the Sapporo Snow Festival.

The city is packed with fun things to do, from hikes like the popular Mount Moiwa to year-round events. It has a very laid-back vibe and friendly people who love showing visitors around.

Head to the surrounding countryside to experience the small-town vibes and cultural attractions when you visit. Each season has its special highlights, from wildflower viewing to harvest festivals.

Kanazawa

Kanazawa is a small city full of history, art, culture, and beautiful places. Its parks, including the Kenroku-en and Gyokusenin Maru Gardens, are among the country’s best.

Don’t miss the chance to try the city’s famous cuisine and seafood dishes, including its famous oden hot pot. Also, make sure to sample the region’s artisanal sake (nihonshu), which is often said to be among the country’s best.

Outside of the city, you can explore the mountain temples of Ishikawa Prefecture. Don’t miss the stunning and ancient Natadera Temple.

Hiroshima

Hiroshima is a must-visit for many reasons. Most famously, it’s the sight of one of two atomic bomb attacks. This tragic piece of history is forever immortalized at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum.

Outside of its reflective sights, there are tons of amazing sights and landmarks worth seeing. Go shopping in the Hondori District, where you can find endless cultural crafts and boutique shops.

Or, head out to the Mikumarikyo Forest Park to see waterfalls and experience monkeys in the forest. If you have time, take a ferry to its offshore islands and walk through ancient villages. Whatever your itinerary, you’ll have plenty to see and do.

Gifu

Gifu is a mesmerizing city that has as much history as it does fun times. Don’t miss the beautiful Kogane Shrine or the massive Gifu Castle.

Head to the Gifu Kinkazan Squirrel Village to see friendly squirrels and then check out the giant Buddha statue of Shōbō-ji. Then, visit the ancient Inaba Shrine before walking through the historical streets of Kawaramachi.

Outside the city, you can visit the mountain ruins of Oga Castle, hike to waterfalls, and spend the day hiking. At night, head into the city for exciting nightlife, bars, clubs, and a booming food scene.

Shizuoka

Shizuoka is a beautiful city right on the coast. It’s a hub for great food, historical sights, and one of the most beautiful landscapes of any Japanese city.

First, check out the ancient Kunōzan Tōshōgū temple before seeing the Nihondaira Yume Terrace for Mt. Fuji views. After seeing the sights, take a hike through the trails and find hidden shrines and temples on your into the city.

If you love art, don’t miss the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art. Here, you’ll see some of the best Japanese and international masterpieces.

Niigata

Niigata is a wonderful city with endless sights for tourists looking to learn about Japanese culture. To learn about the region and its traditions, visit the Northern Culture Museum. This great historical space takes you through centuries of history and traditions.

Afterward, explore the city center near Niigata Station. See the historical Niigata-ken Gokoku Shrine and walk to the charming Saito Villa.

The city has wonderful parks, such as the popular Hakusan Park. Here, you can walk amongst the tori gates and see beautiful architecture and shrines.

Sendai

Sendai is the largest city in Japan’s Tohoku Region. It’s a center of art, culture, history, and gastronomy. It’s also full of incredible nightlife that rivals major cities around the world.

When you visit, see the ruins of Sendai Castle. Then, walk through the Naritasan Temple Sendai. Don’t miss the 15th-century Rinnoji Temple and the small but famous Tsutsujigaoka Tenmangu Shrine.

Sendai is one of the best cities in Japan for seeing cherry blossoms and fall colors. Places like Tsutsujigaoka Park and Shōon-ji Temple are among the best, so time your vacation right.

Osaka

Japan’s second-largest city has a lot to offer travelers. It also has an incredibly different vibe than other regions.

This is the home of Japanese comedy culture and entertainment. It’s also home to the famous Kansai cuisine, which includes comfort foods such as okonomiyaki and tako-yaki.

The city is packed with beautiful sights, including Osaka Castle and the Sumiyoshi Taisha Temple. You’ll also find many traditional theaters, amusement parks, and restaurants that are among the best in Asia.

Fukuoka

Fukuoka is Kyushu’s largest city and one of the country’s best tourist destinations. It offers everything you would want, from world-class shopping and cuisine to ancient temples and nature.

When you’re downtown, sit down to a heaping bowl of Hakata ramen noodles. Then, walk around the city to check out its monuments. Don’t miss Sumiyoshi Jinja, Tochoji Temple, and the Fukuoka Castle Ruins.

Outside the city are some of the most beautiful beaches and hiking trails in Japan. Head to places such as Shiomi Park and Uminokamichi Seaside Park for unforgettable nature.
