Greece is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and a major part of this is because of its beautiful islands. With over 200 habitable islands that are similar and different in so many ways, it becomes challenging to choose the most beautiful to visit. The Greek islands make for perfect island-hopping opportunities or even for someone looking to take a sabbatical and visit one island after another. 

Growing up in Athens and living in Greece, I had the opportunity to explore many of its beautiful islands. Each island on this list comes with my personal recommendation based on the great times and special memories I have from visiting them. It has been a tough choice, as there are other islands that are equally beautiful and less well-known.

However, if you are looking for beautiful natural scenery, stunning architecture, tourism facilities, and numerous exploration opportunities, these 12 islands should definitely be on your must-visit list when in Greece.

Lefkada

Lefkada, also known as Lefkas, is a stunning island in the Ionian Sea off the western coast of Greece. Among the most distinctive features of Lefkada is its beaches.

From the famous Porto Katsiki with its white cliffs and azure waters to the serene Egremni Beach, accessible by a steep staircase, the island boasts some of Greece’s most breathtaking coastal scenery. These are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply soaking up the sun on these pristine shores.

Some other beaches you do not want to miss when in Lefkada include Kathisma and Agiofylli, all with amazing sightseeing and active exploration opportunities.

You may also want to explore the stunning coastal villages like Vassiliki and Agios Nikitas, which is also home to the Agios Nikitas Beach. From Agios Nikitas, you can hike or take a water taxi to the remote but stunning Mylos Beach.

Zakynthos

Zakynthos’s allure lies in its stunning natural beauty, captivating coastline, azure waters, and rich cultural heritage. This island is popular for its breathtaking beaches. 

Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, has constantly been recognized as one of the most iconic beaches in the world. Its pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters, enveloped by limestone cliffs, offer endless opportunities for adventure and photography. The wreck of the MV Panagiotis adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to this already picturesque setting.

Beyond the world-famous Navagio Beach, Zakynthos is also home to over 50 other beaches. If you would like to go beach hopping, some of the must-visits include Gerakas, Kalamaki, Porto Zoro, Banana, and Porto Vromi Beaches, all of which offer varied natural scenery.

You also want to explore the influence of Venetian rule, which is evident in the island’s architecture. The most iconic example of Venetian architecture is the Bochali Venetian Castle. Perched atop a hill overlooking the town, the castle offers panoramic views of the island and the Ionian Sea.

Other must-sees in Zakynthos include the Blue Cave, located in the same region as Navagio Beach, and its chain of picturesque churches, such as the Church of Agios Dionysios.

Crete

 Hike through the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe’s longest canyons, marveling at its towering cliffs and deserted farmhouses. Better yet, you can bask in the sun on the pink sands of Elafonissi Beach or the picturesque Balos Beach.

Rhodes

Rhodes has a rich history dating back to antiquity. In the place of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC, two deer guard the port. Also, venture inland to discover olive groves that adorn the heart of Rhodes. A visit to a local olive oil mill is an opportunity to witness the time-honored process of olive oil production.

Another highlight of Rhodes is the Valley of Butterflies, which is perfect for visiting in summer—between June and September when butterflies flock to the lush green valley.

Corfu

Milos

Don’t skip Milos because it’s less famous than other Greek islands like Crete or Mykonos. This volcanic island is beautiful and has plenty of goodies for tourists. With over 70 exquisite beaches, including Sarakiniko Beach, come prepared to swim, snorkel, or sunbathe all day.

Symi

Symi is a relatively small island with an area of about 22 square miles (58 square kilometers). Accessible by ferry from Rhodes, this island hosts thousands of tourists yearly, the majority of them coming to soak its natural beauty. The island’s harbor is one of its most striking features, with colorful houses cascading down the surrounding hillsides. It is a popular spot for tourists and locals to stroll and enjoy the scenic views.

In addition, Symi is renowned for its neoclassical architecture, characterized by colorful, elegant houses with wooden balconies and intricate facades. This island also has pristine beaches, both sandy and pebbly, scattered around its coastline. Some famous beaches include Nos Beach, Marathounda Beach, and Nanou Beach.

Paros

Kefalonia

Last but not least, Kefalonia! It is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece and features diverse landscapes, including rugged cliffs and sandy beaches. Myrtos Beach and Antisamos Beach are popular beaches on the island and ideal places to soak up sun rays all day.

Take your adventures a notch higher by visiting Melissani Cave. This limestone cave near the town of Sami features an underground lake surrounded by trees and illuminated by sunlight filtering through the cave’s roof.

Kefalonia is also home to diverse wildlife, including the endangered loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that nest on its beaches.
