The best time for island hopping in Greece is from late spring to early fall (May to October). The weather is warm, and the sun is shining during these months.

May and June are good options for exploring but keep in mind that the sea is still chilly. July and August are the peak season with lots of heat and crowds. September and October are especially good because the islands are less crowded, and the temperatures are still pleasant.

Greece has hundreds of islands, so you can’t see them all in one trip. Popular groups of islands include the Cyclades (like Mykonos and Santorini), the Ionian Islands (like Corfu and Kefalonia), and the Dodecanese (like Rhodes and Kos).

Decide what kind of experience you want: busy islands with lots of nightlife or quieter spots. Pick your islands according to your interests.

Ferries are the most common way to travel between islands. Booking your ferry tickets in advance is a good idea, especially in the summer when routes can be busy. Some islands also have airports with domestic flights from Athens or international flights from several European cities, which can save time.

When you have limited time, it is a good idea to stay in the same group of islands or areas. For example, going to Corfu and Santorini on the same trip is very difficult. Combining Mykonos and Santorini is a better option because they are close.

Try to stay at least two to three days on each island to soak in the atmosphere and explore without rushing. Moving too frequently can make your trip more about travel than enjoyment.

Take into account that you need to pack and unpack everything, check out and check in at the hotels, and reach the port or the airport. All of this is on top of the actual travel time between islands. It really makes no sense to change islands too often.

Renting a car is the best option if you want to be flexible with your schedule. There are also certain islands where renting a car is a must, like Lefkada. The earlier you rent a car, the more options you will have and the better prices you will get.

Your choice of islands also directly impacts your budget – opt for cheap Greek islands if your budget is limited. The most popular Greek islands, like Mykonos and Santorini, are pricier. Other islands that are not overrun by tourists are just as beautiful without the heavy price tag.
