Have Fun at Salzwelten

Salzwelten should be at the top of your list to learn more about the town’s rich history. Hallstatt is home to the world’s oldest salt mines, with over 7,000 years of mining history. Salzwelten offers fun-filled guided tours of the salt mines.

You’ll travel into the mines, race down the 210-foot (64-meter-long) miners’ slide just like the miners used to do, visit archaeological sites with ancient tools, and admire the views from the Hallstatt Skywalk.

Wear Warm Clothing: Inside the salt mine, temperatures can be around 7 to 10 degrees Celsius (44 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit).
Plan for a Full Day: Plan at least three hours for your visit, including the funicular ride and the guided tour of the mine.
Accessibility: The mine tours include some walking and stairs, so it’s best suited for visitors with moderate mobility.

Take in the Views From the Skywalk

You can purchase tickets separately for the funicular that takes you to the viewpoint. The funicular ride itself is spectacular. Rising 1,066 vertical feet (325 vertical meters), it offers fantastic views of Hallstatt’s scenery. However, the views do not match the 360° panoramic views atop the 1,181-foot (360-meter) high skywalk of the village, the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Bring a Camera with a Zoom Lens: This will allow you to take close-up shots of Hallstatt and the surrounding mountains.
Check the Funicular Schedule: The operating hours can help you plan your trip better and avoid long waits.

Visit the Catholic Parish Church of Hallstatt

The Catholic Parish Church is also one of the most popular landmarks in Hallstatt. In the famous photographs, you can see this magnificent Romanesque church on the right. It was initially built in the 12th century.

However, the existing church was finished in 1505. Furthermore, it was completely renovated in 2002, although the impressive 12th-century tower remains. While the tall clock tower is a significant draw to the church, things only get more magical inside.

The interior of the Catholic Parish Church features a stunning early 16th-century winged altar, an ornate ceiling, and a beautiful 19th-century neo-Gothic cross altar.

Also known as the “Bone House,” the charnel house is in St. Michael’s Chapel. The chapel dates back to the 12th century and is home to over 600 painted skulls. Many skulls were decorated in the 18th century, but some were painted in the 20th century.

This bridge offers the best views of the falls and picturesque views of Lake Hallstatt. You can also view the waterfall from a car park on the main road, but the views aren’t as impressive.

Wear Sturdy Footwear: The walk to Hallstätter Wasserfall can be rocky and uneven in places.

Explore Marktplatz

Exploring Marktplatz is the best way to enjoy the town’s traditional architecture. This historic square, located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage town, is one of the town’s liveliest and most beautiful parts. The beautiful Holy Trinity statue stands in the center of the square. As you’d expect from Hallstatt’s main square, something is always happening at Marktplatz. In Spring, the square hosts Hallstatt’s traditional Corpus Christi procession.

However, the main event occurs in winter, when the Hallstatt Christmas market comes to life in Marktplatz. While you wander the arts and crafts stalls, treat yourself to mulled wine.

There are 26 exhibitions to explore, including prehistoric salt mining exhibits, Middle Age artifacts, and Johann Georg Ramsauer’s research. Welterbemuseum Hallstatt also offers interactive exhibitions for younger visitors, such as the Epoch Studio and the Museum Rally.

Alternatively, you could start in Echerntal and walk along the stream and through lush forests to Waldbach Ursprung Wildlife Refuge. This scenic trail only takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, various attractions worth visiting are located outside the village, such as Dachstein Krippenstein and the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave. A short drive or cable car ride away, Dachstein Krippenstein is perfect for hiking and sightseeing. In winter, it’s also a popular skiing destination.

The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave offers intricate ice formations, and you can learn about the region’s fascinating geology. Guided tours are available from spring through fall, and tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance.

Visit the 5 Fingers Viewing Platform: The platform offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Dachstein mountains and Lake Hallstatt.
