Seville

Last up in Spain, soak up Seville for two nights to catch a Flamenco show and visit numerous architectural treasures, such as the city’s hulking cathedral, the Royal Alcázar, and Plaza de España. Don’t miss the Barrio Santa Cruz, the former Jewish quarter.

Algarve

From Seville, drive (or take the bus) to Lagos, at the far end of the Algarve region (Portugal). Enjoy a few days here lounging on the beach, exploring the Ponta da Piedade rock formations by boat, surfing, and visiting pretty whitewashed villages.

Next, move to the Central Algarve coast for two nights. There you can go hiking on the stunning Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. From there, you can also visit the beautiful (but crowded) Benagil Cave. If you’re not a fan of crowded places, there are some alternative Algarve sea caves in Alvor.

For the end of the trip, spend a couple of nights at the Pousada do Palácio de Estói, just outside Faro (the airport here has many onward connections). It might not be a beachside hotel, but passing some resting time in a former palace is the perfect ending to this trip. From here, you can easily access the city and take ferries to the breathtaking barrier islands of the Ria Formosa.

From Lagos, it is time to drive up towards Lisbon. But first, stop by Evora where you can spend a day exploring the Bone Chapel, Roman remains, and the quaint old town. Take a ride on Lisbon’s Remodelado tram. Admire the elegant architecture of Chiado. Browse the shelves of Livraria Bertrand, the world’s oldest bookshop that opened its doors in 1792!

Wander through the cobblestone streets of Alfama and marvel at the panoramic views from Castelo de São Jorge. Visit UNESCO World Heritage sites, Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery.

Dive into history and art at one of Lisbon’s many museums. Two must-visit museums are the Fairytale National Coach Museum and the Berardo Collection Museum, which houses some remarkable pieces from the surrealists.

Indulge in a Pastel de Nata (or take a cooking class), a delicious custard tart. Pastéis de Belém is a worthy stop, this tiled shop has been serving its secret recipe since 1837 (tip: sit inside rather than taking it to go!).

Cordoba

The next stop is Cordoba. This Andalusian city has one of Spain’s most important Islamic buildings, the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba. In addition to this historical building, don’t miss the traditional courtyards, which are a big part of the culture in the city.

Seville

After Cordoba, head to the capital of Andalucia, Seville. The city has plenty to see, so spending at least 3 days is recommended.

Huelva, Cadiz, Tarifa

Barcelona

Valencia

Take the train to Valencia and stay for 4 days. Compare the Valencian version of paella with chicken or rabbit to the version you had in Barcelona.  For an even more interactive experience, take a paella cooking class!

See the Silk Museum to learn about Valencia’s role in the silk trade. Then walk through the long park system to see the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. Enjoy a day at the beach with swimming and beach volleyball.

Madrid

Take the train to Madrid to visit Spain’s capital.  Spend the late afternoon people-watching at the large Plaza Mayor.

Braga

From Porto, consider taking a day trip to Braga and spending the last night there to delve into the city’s fascinating religious history.
