Best Time to Visit Phuket

Phuket, one of the most beautiful places in Thailand, is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. With its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and tropical climate, it’s no wonder that people flock to this paradise all year round. However, if you’re planning a family trip to Phuket, then you need to know the best time to visit.

Phuket is warm throughout the year, with the sea also being warm. The best time to visit Phuket is during the months of November-February when the weather is sunny and dry, with temperatures ranging from 23-30 Celsius. This is the high season and it is ideal for beach activities like swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. However, it is also the most expensive time to visit, especially during the New Year period.

If you’re planning a trip to Phuket between March and mid-May, then be prepared for extremely hot weather. Temperatures can reach up to 40 Celsius, and the high humidity makes it feel even hotter. This time of year is not recommended for outdoor activities, and it’s best to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day.

The rainy season in Phuket falls between May-October, and this is the best time to visit if you’re looking for fewer crowds and great deals. However, it’s not recommended to swim on the west coast during this season as the sea is roughest, and there are chances of strong currents. It’s best to have a swimming pool at your hotel during this time. September is the wettest month in Phuket, but it’s the best time for surfers to catch some waves.

In conclusion, the best time to visit Phuket depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re planning a family trip, then November-February is the ideal time as the weather is perfect for beach activities. However, if you’re looking for great deals and fewer crowds, then May-October is the best time to visit. Just make sure to pack accordingly and plan your activities according to the weather.

How Long to Stay in Phuket

When it comes to planning a holiday in Phuket, Thailand, one of the most common questions is how many days are needed to cover the main attractions.

If you’re short on time, it’s possible to see the highlights in just three or four days by staying centrally and strategically planning your itinerary. This way, you can easily reach the main sites and make the most of your limited time.

However, if you really want to have a good time and experience all the fun activities and amazing things that Phuket has to offer, we recommend staying for at least 7 to 10 days or even more for a relaxed holiday.

With a longer stay, you’ll have time for day trips to places like Phi Phi islands, James Bond island and Maya Bay, where you can soak up the sun, swim in crystal clear waters, and enjoy the stunning scenery. You’ll also have plenty of time to discover the local cuisine, which is a highlight of any trip to Thailand. Whether you’re into spicy curries, fresh seafood, or exotic fruits, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

If you’re traveling with family, we recommend staying for at least 7 days to do the day trips to the islands, see the main things in Phuket, and actually enjoy your Phuket holiday. This way, you’ll have time to relax on the beach, go shopping, and explore the local markets. You’ll also have time to participate in some of the amazing activities available in Phuket, such as snorkeling, diving, and kayaking.

In conclusion, whether you’re looking for a quick getaway or a longer vacation, Phuket has something for everyone. With its beautiful beaches, delicious food, and fun activities, it’s no wonder why it’s such a popular destination. So, pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable trip to the Land of Smiles!

How to Get to Phuket

Flying directly to Phuket

Phuket is a popular tourist destination located in southern Thailand. Getting to Phuket is relatively easy, with several transportation options available.

The most convenient way to reach Phuket is by airplane. Phuket International Airport (HKT) is located north of the island, and it is the main airport serving the region. However, there are no direct flights from the US to Phuket, and only a few direct flights from European cities.

We compare all airlines with this search engine to get the lowest price possible for flights. You can also set ‘Everywhere’ as destination and it gives you the cheapest flight anywhere on any given day or find out when is the lowest price to fly to a specific destination.

Tips for Phuket International Airport

When arriving at Phuket International Airport, be prepared for long queues at immigration. To avoid frustration, pack some snacks for your kids to keep them entertained.

Additionally, the exchange rate at airports is not great, so it’s best to exchange money at a bank or a currency exchange office.

Getting from the Airport to Your Hotel

Getting from the Airport to Your Hotel can be a daunting task, especially if you are in a foreign country. However, there are several ways to make this journey a bit easier.

Airport Shuttle

One option is to ask if your hotel offers an airport shuttle. Many hotels provide this service to their guests, and it can save you time and hassle. If your hotel does not offer a shuttle service, there are other options available.

Pickup Service

We always use this highly-rated pickup service with local English-speaking drivers. The ride costs a flat, pre-paid fee, they are monitoring for flight delays and they provide stellar 24/7 customer support

Rent a Car

Another option is to rent a car to get from the airport to your hotel. This is best if you are also planning to explore the island by car.

We always use this search engine to find the best car rental deal. They compare all major companies, like Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, and more, and you get the lowest price. The earlier you book a car, the lower the price. You also get free cancelation up to 48 hours before pick up, which is great if anything happens

Taxis

Taxis are a popular choice for getting from the airport to your hotel. However, it is important to note that there is usually a 100 baht surcharge for airport pickups. This surcharge is in addition to the metered fare, so be sure to factor this into your budget. If you prefer to use a ride-hailing app, Grab is a popular option in Phuket. You can easily find a taxi through the app and pay through the app as well.

Airport Bus

Another option for getting from the airport to your hotel is to take the airport bus. The airport bus takes you to Phuket Town, and from there, you can take a taxi or tuk-tuk to your hotel. This option is more affordable than taking a taxi, but it may take longer to reach your destination.

In summary, there are several ways to get from the airport to your hotel in Phuket. Whether you choose to take a taxi, use a ride-hailing app, or take the airport bus, it is important to plan ahead and consider your budget and travel time. By doing so, you can arrive at your hotel with ease and start enjoying your vacation right away.

How to Get to Phuket from Bangkok

Most travelers fly to Bangkok and then take a domestic flight to Phuket. The short flight of about 1.5 hours is relatively inexpensive. This is the best way to get from Bangkok to Phuket.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Bangkok to Phuket, but this is not a good idea if you are traveling with young kids. The journey is long, taking 12-14 hours, and the conditions may not be comfortable. It is cheaper than a flight, but it’s not worth it for most travelers and it is especially not worth it with a family.

There are no trains in Phuket, so this is not an option either.

If you are comfortable driving in Thailand, you can also rent a car to get to Phuket. However, driving in cities can be challenging due to heavy traffic. It’s best to rent a car if you plan to explore the countryside or travel to nearby towns.

How to Get around Phuket

Getting around Phuket can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you are not familiar with the local transportation options. There are several ways to get around the island, each with its own pros and cons.

Tuk-Tuk

One of the most popular modes of transportation in Phuket is the tuk tuk. These colorful four-wheeled vehicles are good for short distances under half an hour. They are not convenient for longer distances.

However, it is important to agree on the price before starting your journey and to bargain with the driver. Tuk-tuks are often more expensive than other forms of transportation, so it is important to be aware of the cost. They are also everywhere, so it’s the most common way to get around for short distances.

Taxi

Another option is to take a taxi or motorbike taxi. If you arrive at the airport, be aware that there is a 100 baht extra charge for taking a taxi. To avoid any confusion or overcharging, agree on the price before starting your journey. Bargaining with the driver is also recommended.

Tip
Use the Grab app to call a taxi! It’s similar to Uber.

Bus

If you are looking for a cheaper option, taking the bus is a good choice. The songthaew is the local bus in Phuket, which is open-air and has no stops. To catch a bus, simply wave them down when you see one passing by. The bus is much cheaper than a tuk-tuk, but keep in mind that it may take longer to reach your destination.

Rent a Car

For those who prefer more independence and freedom, renting a car or motorbike is the most convenient option. However, it is important to be careful when driving in Phuket as many drivers do not follow signs or traffic rules. Make sure you have an international driving license for insurance purposes.

We always use this search engine to find the best car rental deal. They compare all major companies, like Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, and more, and you get the lowest price. In conclusion, there are plenty of options available to get around in Phuket. Whether you choose to take a tuk-tuk, taxi, bus, or rent a car or motorbike, with a little bit of planning and preparation, you can explore all that Phuket has to offer with ease.

Where to Stay in Phuket with Kids

Phuket, a beautiful island in Thailand, is a fantastic destination for family vacations. With its stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and plenty of activities for kids, Phuket offers a perfect mix of fun, adventure, and relaxation. When it comes to choosing where to stay in Phuket with kids, there are several options to consider. Here are some of the best beaches to stay at in Phuket while traveling with kids.

1. Karon Beach

Karon Beach is an excellent choice for families. It is known as “Patong’s little sister” and has a similar nightlife scene but is more relaxed, making it a good place to stay with kids. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from, and the beach is ideal for swimming and relaxing.

2. Kata Beach

Kata Beach is another great option for families with kids. It offers a range of water sports and activities for kids, and the waters are calm, making it a safe place for kids to swim. The beach is popular with families, so you can expect to find many other families with kids around. Kata Beach is also close to attractions like the Big Buddha, which is a must-visit when in Phuket.

3. Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach is another great place for families with kids to stay. It’s known for being family-friendly and laid-back, with a slow pace of life that’s perfect for relaxing. There are plenty of activities for kids to enjoy, such as swimming, building sandcastles, and playing beach games.

The restaurants on the beach offer a range of cuisines, some with toys for kids, making it easy to dine out with the family. Kamala Beach is also close to everything, so you can easily explore other parts of the island.

4. Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao Beach is an excellent option for families looking for luxury resorts. Part of it is known as Millionaires Row after the villas that line the beach. The beach is stunning, and there are plenty of water sports and activities for kids to enjoy. While it may be more expensive than other beaches, it’s worth it for the luxury experience.

5. Mai Khao Beach

Finally, Mai Khao Beach may seem like an ideal location for a family vacation due to its serene and peaceful environment, but the quiet beach is maybe more suitable for romantic getaways and honeymooners.

Moreover, it’s far from the main attractions of Phuket, and there are limited options for family-friendly activities – but it is near the airport, so perfect if you are staying only shortly. It’s a great option if you are looking for a more quiet and secluded area.

In conclusion, Phuket offers plenty of options for families with kids. Whether you choose to stay at Kamala Beach, Kata Beach, Karon Beach, or Bang Tao Beach, you’re sure to have a memorable vacation.

Where Not to Stay in Phuket with Kids

Phuket has become one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations due to its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant nightlife. However, not all areas of the island are suitable for families with children. If you’re traveling with kids, it’s essential to know where to stay and where not to stay to ensure an enjoyable holiday.

While there are better areas to base yourself with kids, such as Karon and Kamala mentioned above, you can still stay in the areas mentioned here and enjoy yourself with the family. Some of the hotels are excellent for families!

Phuket Town

Firstly, Phuket Town is a great place to experience the history and culture of the island. However, it’s not an ideal location for families with kids as there is no beach, and it’s away from the best beaches on the island. It’s more budget-friendly than other areas of Phuket, but it’s better to do a day trip and not stay in Phuket Town as a family.

Patong

Lastly, Patong is known for its vibrant nightlife and is best suited for singles and partygoers.

It has plenty of bars, restaurants, and hotels, but few luxury options. The beach is just okay compared to other beaches on the island, and it’s less family-friendly in the evening due to the party and touristic atmosphere, especially around Bangla road, the center of nightlife in Patong.

While you can still stay in Patong and enjoy it, there are better options for families with children.

In conclusion, if you’re traveling to Phuket with kids, it’s best to avoid Phuket Town and Patong. Instead, opt for more family-friendly areas like Kata, Karon, or Kamala. These areas have plenty of activities suitable for children, including water sports, amusement parks, and family-friendly restaurants.

Best Kids-Friendly Hotels in Phuket

For families traveling to Phuket, finding the perfect accommodation can be a challenge. Luckily, there are plenty of options available that cater to families with children. Here are the best villas and hotels for families in Phuket.

Good to know
When it comes to planning a vacation in Phuket, Thailand, choosing the right accommodation is key to having a memorable time. Some of the recommended hotels are located within walking distance from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

However, if you are visiting during the low season (mid-May to October), it is highly recommended to have a hotel with a pool. The sea on the west coast of Phuket can be dangerous to swim in, especially when there are rip curls. Having a pool in your hotel will provide a safe and relaxing alternative to swimming in the sea. Not only that, but it also offers a great way to cool off from the tropical heat.

So, while a beachfront hotel may seem like the perfect choice, having a pool is a wise decision especially for the low season that will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable stay in Phuket.

Best Places to Visit in Phuket

Phuket is a beautiful island in Thailand known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich culture. However, there are many other hidden gems to explore that offer a unique experience for your Phuket family vacation.

The Big Buddha, Phuket Old Town and Wat Chalong are the must-visit locations in Phuket. The easiest way to reach them is with this tour that takes you to all three of them and includes a tour guide and pickup from your hotel.

Book a Big Buddha, Phuket Old Town and Wat Chalong guided tour here

1. Big Buddha

One such place is the Big Buddha, which is a seated Maravija Buddha statue standing tall at 45 meters high. To reach the top, you’ll need to climb about 300 steps, but the effort is worth it as you’ll get a great 360-degree view of Phuket. It’s best to visit the Big Buddha during sunset to witness the breathtaking views. The admission is free.

Tip
Follow the dress code by covering your shoulders and knees.

2. Phuket Old Town

Another must-visit place in Phuket is Old Phuket Town, which is home to Sino-Portuguese buildings built in the 19th century.

The town boasts colorful houses, and while it’s not a beach destination, it’s perfect for shopping, immersing yourself in local culture, learning about history and architecture, and enjoying the markets and food.

Book a Big Buddha, Phuket Old Town and Wat Chalong guided tour here

3. Wat Chalong

Finally, Wat Chalong Temple, also known with its real name Wat Chaithararam, is the largest and most popular temple in Phuket. It’s a landmark Buddhist temple that’s free to visit and was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The temple provides a peaceful retreat from the busy tourist areas and is a great place to experience the local culture and religion.

Book a Big Buddha, Phuket Old Town and Wat Chalong guided tour here

There are several other buddhist temples that you can visit, such as Wat Khao Rang in Phuket Town and Wat Suwan Khuha, the temple cave located further from Phuket in Phang Nga.

Tip
Visitors are expected to take off their shoes and cover their shoulders and knees as a sign of respect.

In conclusion, Phuket has much more to offer than just its beaches and nightlife. The Big Buddha, Old Phuket Town, and Wat Chalong Temple are just a few of the many places worth exploring to get a taste of the island’s rich culture and history. Don’t forget to follow the dress code and respect the local customs while visiting these places.

4. Night Markets

If you’re looking for a unique and exciting nightlife experience in Phuket, then you definitely need to check out some of the best night markets in the area. Phuket Town is home to some of the most famous and popular night markets, such as the Phuket Weekend Market (the biggest one in Phuket) and the trendy Chillva Market. Here, you can find everything from local handicrafts and souvenirs to delicious street food and live entertainment.

But if you’re visiting Patong, don’t worry – there are plenty of night markets in different areas to explore here as well. The Bangla Night Market is a must-visit spot for those looking for a vibrant atmosphere and great bargains. Alternatively, you could head over to Malin Plaza, which is known for its delicious street food and laid-back vibe.

No matter which night market you decide to visit, one thing is for sure – you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to sample some of the amazing street food on offer. From spicy curries and grilled meats to sweet treats and refreshing drinks, there’s something here to suit every taste and budget. So grab a seat, soak up the atmosphere, and enjoy a delicious feast under the stars.

Patong

Patong Beach is a popular tourist destination in Phuket and I thought I should mention it here for this reason. It is not one of the best places or beaches for families, although you can still make it work.

Patong is known for its vibrant nightlife and party scene, making it a top choice for those who love to dance the night away. You can also enjoy the nightmarkets in Patong and street food.

The beach itself is decent, but compared to other beaches in the area, it may not be the most beautiful. However, what it lacks in natural beauty, it makes up for in water activities like parasailing and jet skis. These adrenaline-pumping activities are perfect for thrill-seekers who want to experience the rush of the ocean.

Overall, Patong Beach is a great choice for those who want to enjoy exciting nightlife and thrilling water sports – not so much for families though.

In conclusion, Phuket offers some of the best beaches in the world, each with its unique charm and attractions, making it an ideal destination for any type of traveler.

Best Beaches in Phuket

Phuket is a tropical paradise located in the southern part of Thailand that offers some of the best white sandy beaches in the world. The best ones are on the west coast of Phuket, such as Kamala and Karon. The norther you go on the west coast, the more quiet and less crowded it gets, such as Mai Khao.

Safety Precautions when Swimming in Phuket

If you see a red flag, it means that the conditions are too dangerous for swimming, and you should avoid going into the water. It is crucial to take these warnings seriously and prioritize your safety and that of your family members.

Visiting Phuket during the low season can be an excellent way to avoid crowds and enjoy the stunning beaches of this beautiful island. However, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers that come with the rainy season. The sea can be rough with rip currents, making swimming unsafe.

Despite the allure of the ocean, it is always better to err on the side of caution and enjoy the many other activities that Phuket has to offer.

Let’s explore the best beaches for families in Phuket.

1. Karon Beach
