Faro

Faro, the capital of the Algarve, perfectly encapsulates everything travelers love about Portugal’s south coast. This beautiful destination is loved for its picturesque beaches, historic Old Town, bustling marina, and magnificent natural scenery. It’s an excellent place to visit if you’re seeking fun for the whole family.

Beachgoers can soak up the sun on Praia de Faro. Outdoor adventurers can explore Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. Hiking enthusiasts can walk the scenic Ludo Trail, and history buffs can visit Faro’s most famous landmarks. 

Must-visit attractions in the city include Arco da Vila, Arco do Repouso, and Igreja de Santa Maria. Ensure you also sample Portuguese cuisine in one of the many local restaurants.

• Get a Local Guide for Ria Formosa: You can book a guided tour of Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. It’s a great way to learn about the unique ecosystem, especially if you’re into birdwatching. Tours usually last about 2-3 hours and cost around €25 per person.
• Try a Traditional Seafood Dish: Don’t leave Faro without trying “Cataplana de Marisco,” a seafood stew. Head to “O Castelo” (Rua de São José 1) for an authentic and delicious meal. It’s a must for seafood lovers!
• Walk to Ilha Deserta: Take the ferry to Ilha Deserta, a beautiful island just off Faro. It’s a quiet spot to relax and swim. The round-trip ticket costs about €12, and the ferry leaves from Faro Marina several times a day.

Lagos

Lagos is one of the Algarve’s most highly-rated tourist destinations. This vibrant coastal city is famed for its pristine beaches, dazzling emerald waters, spectacular rock formations, and lively nightlife. As such, it’s one of the best places to visit in the Algarve for a beach vacation with friends.

When you’re not tucking into Portuguese food and drink or dancing the night away in one of the many nightclubs, enjoy Lagos’s postcard-perfect coastline. Admire the dramatic cliffs at Ponta de Piedade, sunbathe on Praia da Batata, and walk along Meia Praia, the largest beach in Lagos. Keen surfers should also note that Lagos is one of Portugal’s premier surfing spots.

• Book a boat tour to Ponta de Piedade: Take a boat cruise along the Algarve coast on a traditional Portuguese boat, visiting sea caves, getting close to the Ponta da Piedade rock formation, and seeing beautiful beaches and cliffs.
• Try the seafood at O Camilo: If you’re a seafood fan, go to this beachside restaurant near Praia do Camilo. Their grilled sardines are incredible and cost around 12 euros.
• Go to the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira: This small fort by the beach is often overlooked, but the view from the top is amazing. It’s only 3 euros to enter, and it’s a great spot for photos!

Sagres

Sagres is the Algarve’s best surfing destination. In fact, it’s widely considered to be one of the best surfing locations in Europe. Therefore, this is definitely somewhere you need to visit if you love surfing.

Besides the epic surfing spots, Sagres is a stunning coastal town. It offers an authentic Portugal experience, beautiful sheltered beaches, and a delightfully laid-back atmosphere. Aside from sunbathing and surfing, popular things to do in Sagres include swimming, hiking, and exploring historic sites.

Noteworthy points of interest in the town include Praia do Tonel, Praia da Mareta, Sagres Fortress, and Forte da Baleeira. Praia do Tonel is widely considered the best surfing spot in Sagres.

• Check the Surf Conditions Before You Go: Sagres has a variety of surf spots, but the waves can be different depending on the season and weather. Before heading out, check websites like MagicSeaweed or Surfline to see the surf forecast and pick the best day for your level.
• Get a Local Surf Lesson: Even if you’re an experienced surfer, booking a lesson with a local school like Algarve Surf School can help you discover hidden spots and improve your skills. Plus, they often provide equipment like boards and wetsuits for around €40 for a 2-hour session.
• Try the Coastal Hiking Trails: When you’re not surfing, explore Sagres’ stunning coastal trails. One of my favorites is the walk from Praia do Tonel to Cape St. Vincent. It’s about 2 hours and offers breathtaking views of the cliffs and ocean, all for free.

Carvoeiro  

Carvoeiro is one of the most beautiful places in the Algarve, offering golden sand beaches, crystal-clear emerald waters, and impressive cliffs. In Carvoeiro, travelers can enjoy a relaxed beach vacation with a splash of traditional Portuguese charm. 

You’ll likely spend most of your time in the town sunbathing on the beach, walking along the coast, and exploring the narrow streets. In Carvoeiro town center, you’ll find beautiful whitewashed houses, quaint souvenir shops, and authentic Portuguese restaurants. 

However, the coastline steals the crown, especially Praia de Carvoeiro. Surrounded by plant-covered cliffs, this powdery beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and watching the sunset. You’ll find the best views of the beach from atop the cliffs.

• Visit the Algar Seco Caves: These amazing caves are just a short walk from Carvoeiro Beach. You can explore them on your own or take a guided boat tour for a better experience.
• Grab Lunch at O Pescador: If you’re looking for fresh seafood, O Pescador is a great choice. It’s right near the beach, and the grilled sardines are amazing!
• Try the Cliffside Walk at Sunset: The walk along the cliffs to Praia do Carvalho offers stunning views, especially around sunset. It’s a peaceful way to end the day, and you can enjoy a quiet spot away from the crowds.

Tavira

Tavira is one of the most beautiful places in the Algarve because it offers travelers a magical combination of medieval history and coastal charm. This stunning medieval town in southern Portugal is renowned for its breathtaking architecture, medieval castle, and beautiful natural scenery. 

Whether you want to sit on a beach, enjoy river walks, or explore historic sites, Tavira has something for you. Spend your time in Tavira exploring the hilltop castle ruins, admiring the fascinating architecture, and enjoying the impressive scenery. 

Notable attractions in town you don’t want to miss include Castelo de Tavira, the Roman Bridges, the old Fisherman’s Quarter, and Porta de Dom Manuel. Meanwhile, the best natural attractions are Praia da Ilha de Tavira and the Gilão River.

• Explore the Gilão River by kayak: Rent a kayak at one of the shops near the Roman Bridge for a peaceful view of Tavira. It’s a great way to see the town from a different angle and enjoy the natural beauty up close.
• Visit the Mercado Municipal for fresh seafood: Head to the Mercado Municipal in Tavira’s center (open every day until 3 PM). It’s the best spot to grab fresh seafood and enjoy local flavors at affordable prices.
• Take a boat trip to Ilha de Tavira: I recommend booking a boat trip to Ilha de Tavira for a quiet escape. It’s only a 15-minute ride, and the beaches are less crowded compared to others in the Algarve.

Albufeira

Albufeira is one of the Algarve’s most sought-after holiday destinations. The gorgeous clifftop city is best known for its picture-perfect beaches, rich history, and lively nightlife. It’s a big hit with families and groups of friends seeking a fun-filled summer vacation. 

Once a small fishing village, Albufeira has grown to become a hub for fun and adventure-packed vacations. However, one thing that has remained the same is its impressive natural beauty.

Almost everywhere you look in Albufeira, you’ll find beautiful buildings, soft sandy beaches, bright blue waters, and fascinating landmarks. Praia dos Alemães, Praia dos Pescadores, Praia do Túnel, and Albufeira Old Town perfectly sum up the city’s beauty.

Travel Tips

• Visit the Marina for Boat Tours: The Albufeira Marina is a great spot to explore if you want to experience the coastline from the water. I took a boat tour that lasted about two hours, and it was the perfect way to see hidden caves and beaches that you can’t reach by land. The tours range from €20 to €40 per person.
• Explore the Local Markets for Unique Souvenirs: If you’re looking for something special to take home, check out the local markets in the Old Town. I found handmade jewelry and traditional Portuguese tiles that made great gifts. They’re open daily, and prices are reasonable for what you get.
• Avoid Peak Lunchtime at Popular Restaurants: Some of the restaurants near the beach get super busy between 1 PM and 3 PM. I recommend going for an early lunch or waiting until later, around 4 PM, when it’s much quieter and you’ll get better service without the rush.

Praia da Falésia

Praia da Falésia, located between Vilamoura and Albufeira, is one of the Algarve’s finest beaches. A Blue Flag-designated beach, Praia da Falésia is recognized for its outstanding natural beauty. You’ll quickly fall in love with the beach’s azure waters, long stretch of golden sand, and dramatic cliff backdrop.

Praia da Falésia is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and have fun. You can spend the entire day sunbathing and swimming. It’s also a popular place to hike and participate in water sports. 

Follow the cliff walk that hugs the coastline for the best beach views. The views from the top of the cliffs are incredible.

Travel Tips

• Arrive Early to Get a Good Spot: If you want a perfect spot on the sand, come early in the morning. The beach gets busy quickly, especially in summer, and finding a nice spot with a view can be tricky later in the day.
• Bring Water Shoes: The cliffs create some rocky areas where the water meets the sand, so water shoes are great for walking along the shoreline without hurting your feet. Plus, they’re perfect if you plan to swim or do water sports.
• Check Out the Local Restaurants: After a day at the beach, head to a nearby restaurant for some delicious seafood. I loved dining at one of the local places in Albufeira, where you can enjoy fresh fish and enjoy the coastal vibe. The local restaurants around the beach offer amazing views too!

Silves

Silves might not be by the sea, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the Algarve’s most beautiful destinations. While many places in the Algarve are known for their picturesque coastlines, Silves is instead recognized for its historic architecture. Between the 9th and 12th centuries, Silves was a Moorish stronghold and significant trading center.

As such, travelers will find many exciting historical landmarks in the town. However, the most iconic sight in Silves is the hilltop Castelo de Silves. This redbrick, 8th to 13th-century castle towers above the town as a breathtaking backdrop. Other must-visit landmarks in Silves include Sé Catedral de Silves, Cruz de Portugal, and Cisterna Medieval de Silves.

Travel Tips

• Go on a guided tour of the castle: I recommend taking a guided tour of Castelo de Silves. The guides really bring the history to life and help you understand the significance of the castle and its surroundings. It’s a small extra cost but worth it for the insight.
• Visit the Silves Municipal Market: The market is a great spot for local food and souvenirs. It’s less touristy than other places in the Algarve, so you get a more authentic experience. You can find fresh produce, cheeses, and handmade goods – a perfect stop if you want to grab something unique.
• Plan your visit around the Silves Medieval Fair: If you’re in town in early August, try to catch the Silves Medieval Fair. It’s a fun way to experience the town’s history through reenactments, food, and music. The fair brings the place alive with atmosphere, so don’t miss it if you can!

Quarteira

Quarteira was one of the first resort towns to be developed in the Algarve. The town is well known for its beach resorts, warm weather, and delicious Portuguese cuisine. However, Quarteira’s main draw is its beaches, which is the original reason the town was developed as a tourist destination. 

A beautiful golden sand beach with glistening emerald waters dominates the entire length of Quarteira’s seafront. The beach in question is called Praia da Quarteira. As a result, you’ll spend most of your vacation walking along the sand, swimming in the sea, and sunbathing. 

You can also participate in watersports like jet skiing. We don’t know about you, but that sounds like the perfect vacation destination.

Travel Tips

• Avoid midday sun on the beach: The sun can be really strong between 12 PM and 3 PM. I’d recommend going early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat and the crowds.
• Rent bikes to explore the area: You can rent bikes in Quarteira for around 10€ a day. It’s a fun and easy way to get around and see more of the coast, like nearby Vilamoura.
• Take a boat tour from the marina: There are plenty of boat tours at the Vilamoura Marina, just 10 minutes away by car. Prices usually start at 20€ for a short trip. It’s a great way to see the coastline and spot some dolphins!

Alvor

Alvor is one of the most naturally beautiful resort towns in the Algarve. This stunning coastal town is famed for its sandy beaches, verdant cliffs, unique rock formations, and charming Portuguese town center. Alvor is located approximately a 30-minute drive from Lagos, so you have no excuse not to visit.

Alvor has plenty of boardwalks and hiking trails that offer spectacular views of the Algarve’s magnificent coastline. Better yet, Praia de Alvor is one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. This sandy heaven extends for approximately 2 miles (3.2 kilometers), offering sparkling waters, soft golden sand, and awe-inspiring rock formations. 

Meanwhile, in Alvor, don’t miss Castelo de Alvor and Igreja do Divino Salvador de Alvor. 

Travel Tips

• Visit Alvor’s Hidden Coves: If you love exploring, check out the quieter coves near Praia de Alvor. These hidden spots offer peace and beautiful views, perfect for a relaxing escape from the busy beach.
• Take a Kayak Tour: I highly recommend a guided kayak tour along the coast. You get up close to the stunning rock formations and caves. Tours are available at the beach, and it’s a fun way to see the coastline from a different angle.
• Eat at Restaurante O Arco: For a true taste of the Algarve, head to Restaurante O Arco in the town center. The seafood is fresh, and the cozy atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for dinner after a day of sightseeing.

Benagil Caves

Benagil Caves is one of the most spectacular places in the Algarve. For those who don’t know, It’s a magical sea cave or grotto whose unique shape has been carved by the Atlantic’s mighty waves. Located near Benagil, a Portuguese fishing village, this cave is a sight to behold.

Most sea caves in Portugal are small and dark. However, Benagil Caves are very different. Instead, it’s spacious, bright, and easily accessible by boat or kayak. Brilliantly, the waves have eroded the cave to create wide openings.

One of the openings allows sunlight to enter the cave. If you time your visit right, the sunlight will shine directly through the hole, creating a fascinating beam of light.

Travel Tips

• Book a guided tour: Take a boat ride along the Algarve coast, where you can see historic forts, fishing villages, towering cliffs, and the stunning Benagil Caves, especially beautiful at sunset.
• Check tide times: Timing is key! I found the best time to visit is during low tide, which gives you better access to the caves and more time to explore. You can find tide schedules online or ask your boat operator.
• Wear water shoes: If you plan to kayak or swim near the caves, water shoes are a lifesaver. The rocks can be slippery, and they’ll keep you comfortable when stepping in and out of the water.

Carrapateira

Carrapateira is among the best places to experience the Algarve’s wild beauty. Located along the west coast of the Algarve, this coastal village is surrounded by a rugged landscape that features cliffs, beaches, and verdant hills. Unsurprisingly, this makes Carrapateira a popular place to hike. 

You might also be happy to hear it’s a popular Portuguese surfing destination. Relax on one of the many golden sand beaches when you’re not hiking along the coast or catching a wave. Praia da Bordeira and Praia da Zimbreirinha are just two beaches you must visit.

You should also visit Pontal da Carrapateira, a scenic rocky headland with mind-blowing coastal views. There’s a boardwalk here that makes walking easier.

• Catch the Sunset at Praia da Bordeira: Head to Praia da Bordeira in the evening for an incredible sunset. It’s one of the best spots along the coast, and the view from the cliffs is unforgettable.
• Join a Surf Lesson: If you’ve never surfed before, try a lesson at Praia da Carrapateira. There are great surf schools like Surf School Carrapateira that offer group or private lessons. It’s a fun way to experience the waves.
• Pack Water and Snacks for Hikes: If you’re planning to hike around Pontal da Carrapateira, make sure to bring water and some snacks. The trails can be long, and there aren’t many places to stop along the way.
