Ylläs is the largest ski resort in Finland. However, that doesn’t stop it from being one of the world’s most affordable skiing destinations. After the budget-friendly ski pass prices, you can rent a complete set of skiing equipment for less than €38 ($39). Brilliantly, beginners can book skiing lessons for only €40 ($41).

At Ylläs, winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy 33 miles (53 kilometers) of skiable terrain and up to 17.3 inches of snow. In total, there are 62 trails to tackle. Nearly 50% of the skiing slopes here are over 0.6 miles (1-kilometer) long.

Eight slopes are also longer than 1.24 miles (2 kilometers), and the longest trails are over 1.6 miles (3 kilometers) long. What’s not to like?

Scenic Gondola Ride: Take the Ylläs 1 Gondola for incredible panoramic views of the fells. A round trip costs about €16 ($16), and it’s a must for both skiers and non-skiers.

Vogel Ski Resort, Slovenia

Cost – Adults’ ski passes start from €43 ($45)

Despite being the largest ski resort in Slovenia, Vogel Ski Resort in Triglav National Park is one of the world’s cheapest skiing destinations. It offers exceptional skiing facilities, 13 miles (22 kilometers) of skiable terrain, and up to 11.8 inches of snow. This skiing area is between 1,866 and 5,905 feet (569 and 1,800 meters), so you can expect spectacular winter scenery.

The resort also offers almost 5 miles (8 kilometers) of cross-country skiing and a snowboard park. As if that wasn’t enough, Vogel Ski Resort features a Children’s Park for young skiers and adult beginners. You can enroll in a skiing lesson if you’ve never skied before.

Lessons typically cost between €40 and €50 ($42 and $52) hourly.

Cable Car to Vogel: Start your day by taking the Vogel Cable Car from Lake Bohinj for €29.50 ($30) round trip. The ride offers breathtaking views of Triglav National Park.
Mountain Hut Dining: Grab lunch at Viharnik, the restaurant at the top of the cable car. The goulash and strudel are highly recommended and perfect for warming up.

Sugar Mountain, North Carolina, United States

Cost – Adults’ ski passes start from $58.

Sugar Mountain, in North Carolina, is one of the most affordable skiing destinations in the United States. The full price for a daily ski pass and full ski set rental is less than $95. Better yet, it’s not uncommon for the resort to offer discounts on ski passes and equipment rental.

The Sugar Mountain summit is 5,300 feet (1,615 meters) high and receives an average of 78 inches of snow annually. This makes it one of the snowiest spots in North Carolina and a popular winter sports destination. There are over 125 acres (50.5 hectares) of skiable terrain on 20 varying slopes.

Other facilities include tubing trails, ice skating facilities, and skiing schools.

Ice Skating Rink: The outdoor ice skating rink at Sugar Mountain costs $26 per session, including skate rentals. Sessions last 1.5 hours and are a fun break from skiing.
Tubing Park: Try the tubing park for $40 per session (typically 1 hour and 45 minutes). It’s family-friendly and located near the base lodge.

Harrachov, Czech Republic

Cost – Adults’ ski passes start from 660 CZK ($27).

With daily ski passes costing less than $30, Harrachov in the Czech Republic is easily one of the world’s best budget-friendly skiing destinations. At Harrachov, winter sports lovers can participate in skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing. There are four runs at this resort, all of varying difficulty.

As such, the resort is suitable for all age groups as well as all levels of riders. Harrachov spans roughly 5 miles (8 kilometers) and experiences almost 20 inches of snow. The advanced Black slope is ideal for experts who want to hone their skills.

Meanwhile, the Red slope suits intermediate skiers. Beginners and those on a skiing school will likely ride the Blue slope, the easiest trail in the resort.

Cable Car to Čertova Hora: Take the Harrachov cable car to Čertova Hora for stunning views and access to all ski runs. A round trip costs approximately 180 CZK ($7).
Mumlava Waterfall: Just a 30-minute walk from the resort, visit Mumlava Waterfall, a beautiful frozen cascade during winter. Entry is free, and the trail is beginner-friendly.

Myoko Suginohara, Japan

Myoko Suginohara, in Central Japan, is one of Asia’s most affordable skiing destinations. It’s also one of the best places to experience Japan’s famous powder. The resort receives up to 42.6 feet (13 meters) of snow yearly.

It offers views of Mt Fuji from its summit and features over 31 miles (50 kilometers) of skiable terrain. There are 16 trails to choose from in total, but the main highlight is a 27,887-foot (8,500-meter) run. This enormous run is perfect for advanced skiers seeking a challenge.

At the time of writing, Myoko Suginohara has eight beginner slopes, six intermediate trails, and two advanced runs. The resort also provides ski and snowboard lessons.

Mt. Fuji Viewpoint: For the best chance to see Mt. Fuji, take the Suginohara Ropeway on a clear day. It’s included with your ski pass.

Dizin, Iran

Cost – Adults’ ski passes start from $25.

Dizin is an Iranian ski resort in the Alborz Mountain Range, approximately 43 miles (70 kilometers) from Tehran, Iran’s capital. Here, skiing enthusiasts can find over 1,158 acres (469 hectares) of skiable terrain between 8,694 and 11,811 feet (2,650 and 3,600 meters). This includes 23 marked skiing trails of varying difficulty.

The Dizin Ski Resort currently features five beginner slopes, seven intermediate trails, eight experienced runs, and three expert routes. Regarding prices, Dizin couldn’t be more affordable.

If you purchase a one-day ski pass and rent all your gear, you’ll still only spend approximately $50. Even a one-day skiing tour, including Tehan pick-up and a hotel stay, only costs $104 (excluding ski pass and equipment rental).

Timing for Best Conditions: Dizin’s ski season runs from late November to early May. Aim for January or February for the best snow quality and fewer crowds on weekdays.
Local Eats at Dizin: Try the on-site restaurant at Hotel Dizin for hearty Persian dishes like kebabs and khoresht after a long day on the slopes. It’s convenient and reasonably priced.

Uludağ Ski Center, Turkey

Uludağ Ski Center is one of the most accessible skiing destinations in Turkey. According to the Uludağ website, you can easily reach the resort by sea, air, land, and cable car. This picturesque ski resort spans 28,016 acres (11,338 hectares) and offers 17.3 miles (28 kilometers) of skiing and snowboarding slopes.

There are currently 15 different slopes for you to race down, and the resort also features equipment rental stores and ski schools. The ski school is helpful if you’ve never skied before. The expert instructors will have you standing up in no time.

In the winter, the slopes at Uludağ Ski Center experience 26 inches of snow, so wrap up warm.

Getting There via Cable Car: The Bursa Teleferik cable car is the easiest and most scenic way to reach Uludağ Ski Center. A round-trip ticket costs around 350 TRY ($9.85), and the ride offers stunning views of the snow-covered landscape.
Layer Up for the Snow: With an average snow depth of 26 inches in winter, invest in thermal layers and waterproof gear. You can rent additional equipment directly at the resort.

Glenshee Ski Centre, Scotland, United Kingdom

Glenshee Ski Centre is the largest ski resort in Scotland, offering 25 miles (40 kilometers) of skiing and snowboarding slopes. Nestled in the breathtaking Cairngorms National Park, this winter wonderland has everything you need to have fun. For starters, its 3,504-foot (1,068-meter) tall mountain offers a diverse mix of mellow and steep slopes.

There are over 20 ski lifts to ride and 36 snowy runs to race down. Secondly, Glenshee Ski Centre ensures everyone can ski. Thanks to Disability SnowSport Scotland, even visitors with disabilities have the opportunity to race down the slopes.

Ski Equipment Rentals: You can rent skis, snowboards, and other gear at the resort, but I found booking in advance online to be more cost-effective and time-efficient.
Glenshee Café: I recommend the café near the ski lifts for a quick bite. It serves quick meals like soups and sandwiches.

Alpbach, Austria

Cost – Adults’ ski passes start from €43 ($44).

In winter, the stunning Austrian village of Alpbach transforms into one of Europe’s best places to ski. Situated in Tyrol, this scenic town offers a selection of outstanding ski resorts, one of the most affordable being Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau. Here, a one-day ski pass and a complete set of ski equipment rental costs less than €75 ($78).

At Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, you can enjoy up to 70 miles (113 kilometers) of snowy, skiable terrain. The resort receives up to 119 inches of snow yearly. You’ll find almost 19 miles (30.5 kilometers) of beginner runs and 33 miles (54 kilometers) of intermediate slopes.

There are also 8 miles (13 kilometers) of advanced trails for expert skiers. This ski resort also features tobogganing runs and winter hiking trails.

Travel Tips

Transportation to the Resort: If you’re arriving from Innsbruck, take the train to Brixlegg, then catch a local bus or taxi to Alpbach. The journey takes about 1.5 hours in total.
Local Dining: For a cozy lunch, head to Gasthof Jakober for traditional Tyrolean dishes. Their schnitzel is a must-try.

Bansko, Bulgaria

Bansko is a town at the base of the Pirin Mountains in southwest Bulgaria. Part of Pirin National Park, it serves as the gateway to 21 skiing slopes. This includes an exhilarating 15,944-foot (4,860-meter) advanced trail from near the peak of Todorka.

Sixteen modern and well-connected ski lifts serve the Bansko ski area, which reaches a height of 8,398 feet (2,560 meters). At this elevation, snow cover can measure 63 inches. Another excellent thing about Bansko is the affordability of its skiing and snowboarding lessons.

A four-hour skiing lesson costs only 105 BGN ($56). After a busy day of skiing, party the night away at Happy End, Bansko’s biggest apres-ski bar.

Try Bulgarian Cuisine: Don’t miss traditional Bulgarian food at local taverns like Mehana Momini Dvori. The banitsa (a pastry with cheese) and kavarma (a meat stew) are both delicious options.

Shymbulak Ski Resort, Kazakhstan

Cost – Adults’ ski passes start from 20,000 KZT ($38).

Shymbulak Ski Resort, also known as Chimbulak, is a popular winter sports resort near Almaty, Kazakhstan. It’s the largest ski resort in Central Asia and is located at an elevation of 7,217 feet (2,200 meters). There are 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) of slopes available across eight pistes.

Skiing trails range from beginner-friendly to advanced. Thanks to a reliable gondola system, skiing at Shymbulak is fast, exciting, and easily accessible. Occasionally, the resort also offers night skiing, which brings the mountains to life with bright lights.

Other activities offered by Shymbulak Ski Resort include horse riding, tubing, ziplining, and paragliding. With so much to offer, this is an excellent resort to visit with children.

Eating at the Top: The mountain restaurants at the top offer great food, but prices can be high. Bring your own snacks if you want to save a bit, or grab lunch at one of the cafés lower down in the resort.
Advanced Skiing: For advanced skiers, check out the areas around the Tien Shan Mountains. It offers some of the best off-piste areas, but make sure to hire a guide for safety.

Goderdzi, Georgia

Goderdzi is easily one of the world’s most affordable skiing destinations, offering skiers ski passes for as little as $10.39 daily. It’s located at an elevation of 6,643 feet (2,025 meters) above sea level and receives up to 49 feet (15 meters) of snow annually. Therefore, you can expect exceptional skiing conditions.

It may not be the largest skiing area worldwide, but it makes up for that with low prices, epic skiing, and reliable facilities. This skiing area is also somewhat unheard of, so you won’t encounter large crowds. Goderdzi currently offers 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) of skiable slopes best suited to beginners and intermediate skiers.

You can easily access these slopes via three modern ski lifts.
