Being a travel writer can take you to some jaw-dropping destinations. However, the places with the biggest impact can surprise you.

Traveling isn’t just about eating, seeing amazing sights, and experiencing new things. It’s also about making connections and learning new things about the world and yourself.

Out of 45 countries, 40 US states, and a lifetime’s worth of memories, I can narrow down my favorite places to 12 life-changing destinations.

I taught English in rural Japan for four years. During my time there, I traveled throughout the country. From dancing in local festivals to going on surf trips with my Japanese friends, the country quickly felt like home.

For travelers, it’s hard to top this fascinating island nation. From its food — I dare anyone to find a bad meal there, to its friendly people, Japan is easy to fall in love with. Add countless historical and cultural landmarks, beautiful nature, and safety, and you’ve got the perfect destination.

For first-timers, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara are a must. If you want to get off the beaten path, travel to the volcanic shores of Kagoshima or the rural countryside of Yamagata. Wherever you go, eat everything you can, and if locals want to show you around their community, take them up on it. Trust me, it will change your life.

Visiting Peru was like a dream. From hiking the Andes and Machu Picchu to eating mouth-watering ceviche in Lima, the five months I spent in the country were some of the best moments of my life.

It was also infinitely educational. Peru is full of history and culture. It’s a hub for art, music, literature, and creativity and has one of the world’s most beloved cuisines. People are often excited to share their culture, traditions, and divine food with visitors, which makes it feel incredibly welcoming.

Peru has multiple climates, from the jungles of the Amazon Rainforest to the towering Andes Mountains and the coastal Atacama Desert. Each region is unique, with its own culinary traditions, cultures, and natural highlights. One day, you can be trekking through the Amazon rainforest, and the next, gasping for oxygen on a snowy mountain peak, gazing at sacred archeological sites. If you love learning, adventuring, and eating fantastic food, then Peru should be on your bucket list.

With over 17,000 islands, more than 1,300 cultures, and some of the world’s densest biodiversity hotspots, it’s hard to find a more exciting destination. Most tourists only come to Bali. Although the island is special, there are many more destinations that are just as thrilling to visit.

This beautiful tropical nation spreads across the world’s largest group of islands. Each one has a unique culture, language, and cuisine. Combined with dramatic volcanic peaks, tropical forests, and endless art and music, you’ll be in for the adventure of a lifetime.

Like all my favorite places to visit, it’s really all about the people. If you leave the tourist hotspots and flash a warm smile, you’ll meet the real Indonesia very quickly. When this happens, it’s hard to leave.

I had no expectations when I first came to Argentina, but the country pulled me in and never let go. Its culture, its music, its food, and its people are hard to define. Yet once you’re there, its mysteries open up, and quickly, it all makes sense.

The country of Argentina extends from the humid subtropical forests of the Parana River to the north to the cold mountains of Patagonia. Its capital, Buenos Aires, is the birthplace of tango and a hub for theater, music, and art.

If you visit Argentina, you’ll need several weeks or longer. Each destination is full of things to do and experience. It’s also one of the best places to travel off the beaten path. If you love wine, smoky barbecues, big cities, and rural landscapes at the edge of the world, then this destination is for you.

Yes, Brazil is beautiful. But when you get there, you’ll understand why its beauty is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to its charms.

From its natural beauty to its culture, Brazil is a captivating destination. Each region offers something unique and exciting. From the Afro-Brazilian culture and beaches of the north to the rural mountains and cities of the south, there’s something for everyone in South America’s largest country.

For visitors who love art, music, and culture, don’t miss Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Recife, or Salvador. For nature, check out Iguaçu Falls, Manaus, or the mountains of Santa Catarina State. No matter if you’re sipping caipirinhas on a beach or trekking through rural villages, it’s hard not to fall in love with Brazil.

Visiting Morocco is an experience unlike anywhere else in the world. It has ancient cities, incredible food, and beautiful nature. It’s also full of friendly people who know how to have a good time.

My best memories of Morocco involved picnicking with locals and cramming into a rural taxi with a bag full of raw meat and fresh bread — a long story that involves a lot of cooking and a lot of eating.

For travelers who want to learn about history while experiencing adventures, it’s hard to beat Morocco. Don’t miss the cultural hotspots of Fez and Marrakech or the beauty of the coast and Atlas Mountains.

From north to south, Thailand is full of history, culture, natural beauty, friendly people, and food: endless spicy food. If you’re a foodie, you should book your ticket now.

Thailand’s lively capital, Bangkok, is one of the world’s most exciting cities for a glutton to travel to. From the noodle dishes of Yaowarat Street (Chinatown) to the spicy curries of the floating markets of the outskirts, you’ll be lost in a world of flavor.

For anyone who loves romantic beaches, ruins, great food, and a laid-back lifestyle by the sea, it’s hard to top Croatia. The country has a rich history and is full of stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites and historical places.

What attracts many people to Croatia, including myself, is its coast. Crystal-clear water surrounds pine-covered islands with majestic limestone beaches. It’s hard to envision a more picturesque place.

If water isn’t your thing, the country is also a haven for food and wine lovers. You’ll have world-class wine, exciting cuisine, and charming restaurants and inns that are fun to visit throughout the year.

Mexico

Complex, ancient, and unlike anywhere else in the world, Mexico was one of my favorite destinations. If you love history, cuisine, and nature, it’s definitely worth visiting.

Although the country is famous for its vacation getaways, an authentic Mexican experience is all about the rural countryside and the small towns called ‘Pueblos Magicos.’ These communities each have preserved cultural landmarks and unique traditions that make them the ultimate travel destinations.

Plus, there are few cities in the world as exciting as Mexico’s sprawling capital, Mexico City. Within this massive metropolis of over 20 million people are ancient ruins, famous restaurants and street food, and iconic places where some of the world’s most influential literature, art, and music were born.

Set deep within the Himalayas is Nepal. Its rich history and culture alone make it one of my favorite destinations. Add in its world-famous nature and landscapes, and you’ve got the perfect travel destination.

Nepal is full of charming towns and rural landscapes with temples and holy sites. In its capital, Kathmandu, you’ll find centuries-old temples and palaces, as well as monuments such as the Buddha Stupa and museum-filled Durbar Square.

Other cities, such as Pokhara, offer adventurous travelers plenty to see and experience. If you’re feeling up for it and have the time, try hiking the Annapurna Mountains or even try reaching the base camp of Mt. Everest.

As a surfer, most people are surprised to learn how much I love Austria. However, once I set foot in the country, I fell for it quickly.

Austria is a small and landlocked country with beautiful mountains, culturally rich cities and towns, and amazing people who made me feel welcome wherever I went. Its landscapes are striking, and with amazing food and wine, it was hard to leave.

If you love historical places and exciting cities, spend time in Vienna, Austria’s capital. Then, head to the vineyards of Klosterneuburg and Graz before exploring the mountains and towns of the Alps. No matter which season you visit, you’ll be in for a treat.

USA

I was born and raised in the good ol’ USA and it’s still one of my favorite destinations. Desert rock, monster trucks, tailgating, and all-day BBQs; yes, I know this well. However familiar and, at times, quirky, I’ll always cherish traveling throughout my home country.

The United States has endless natural wonders, diverse cultures, and hospitable people who love showing strangers around. Each state is like a different country, which makes cross-country road trips so much fun.

No matter if I’m driving along Highway 1 on a West Coast surf trip or traversing the rural Appalachian mountains, every mile makes me appreciate my home even more. As a travel destination, it’s hard to beat the USA.
