If you are tired of Google’s updates decimating your traffic, then this post is for you.

Today, I want to share my experience with Flipboard and how it has significantly boosted my blog’s traffic. I’ve just reached a major milestone in monthly pageviews from Flipboard: 100k in the last 30 days.

Edited to add: This result seems increasingly challenging to reach since the platform appears to have been inundated with new creators. You can still get some traffic if you put in the time and work, but Flipboard seems less ideal as a traffic source than when I wrote this.

I started using Flipboard back in October, and it has been a game-changer for my site.

Let me explain Flipboard, why it’s a must-use tool for everyone, and especially why bloggers should leverage it to promote their posts. I’ll also walk you through how to get started with Flipboard.

Why Listen to Me

My blog has been growing steadily, but it wasn’t until I discovered Flipboard that I saw a significant spike in my page views. In just a few months, I’ve gone from a handful of views to 100k monthly page views from Flipboard. My experience with Flipboard has been nothing short of amazing, and I want to share how you can achieve similar success.

Here’s my Flipboard profile—you’re welcome to join my group magazines. Just drop a comment on the group magazine cover. You will see the invite as a reply to your comment, but it only shows on your laptop. Keep an eye out for the invite!

What is Flipboard?

Flipboard is a social media platform that’s incredibly friendly to publishers and creators. It lets you collect articles, photos, and videos in personalized magazines. It’s like having your own digital scrapbook that you can share with others.

“But who has time for another social media?”

Unlike Instagram and TikTok, where people go to aimlessly scroll through tons of photos and videos, Flipboard users visit the platform to find and read engaging content.

Why People Should Use Flipboard

Flipboard is not only fun but also very useful. It helps you keep all the things that interest you organized in one place. You can follow different topics, create magazines on anything you like, and discover content from all over the web. It’s a great way to stay updated and entertained.

For bloggers, Flipboard is a goldmine. Here’s why:

  • Easy to Use: Simply drop a link to your blog post into one of your magazines. No graphic design skills are needed, like Pinterest.
  • Targeted Audience: Flipboard is full of people who are eager to read content. Your posts can reach a highly engaged audience.
  • Increased Traffic: As my experience shows, Flipboard can drive significant traffic to your blog.

Common Issues With Flipboard

It Doesn’t Work Unless You Do

It’s not magic; you need to put in the work. While Flipboard can significantly boost your blog traffic, results take time. You need to consistently share quality content and engage with the platform for about six months before you start seeing meaningful traffic.

“Does Anyone Use Flipboard?”

Oh yes, about 150 million people do. While this is much smaller than the number of Facebook users, it’s still a significant audience. If you can capture just a few thousand page views from Flipboard, it can make a noticeable difference to your blog’s traffic. Every bit helps, right?

“I Don’t Like the Interface”

Well, you don’t have to like the Flipboard interface to use it—you just have to like the traffic it brings to your site. The benefits far outweigh any minor inconveniences with the interface or occasional bugs.

“I tried it, and I only got 3 page views”

Most probably you tried it for a couple of days. You need to give it time. Success on Flipboard doesn’t happen overnight. Consistently share quality content, engage with the community, and be patient. With steady effort over a few months, you’ll start to see significant improvements in your blog traffic.

“I’ve Been Trying It for Months, and I Don’t Get Traffic”

This means that, most probably, your titles and images suck – sorry for the tough love on this one. You need a catchy title and great images to get traction on Flipboard, like on all social media. Use a tool like PostPolish to replace your SEO-focused title with a catchy one and to replace your image with a better one.

“I Don’t Publish Many Posts”

Remember, Flipboard prioritizes new content, so make sure to flip your posts as soon as you publish them. If you don’t publish new posts frequently, use PostPolish to refresh your old content with a new date—otherwise, Flipboard will often display the original publication date, even if you’ve updated it in WordPress.

How to Get Started on Flipboard

  1. Set Up a Profile
First, you need to create a Flipboard account. Make sure your profile is complete with a bio and a good profile picture.
  2. Create Magazines
Next, create magazines based on your blog’s topics. For example, if you blog about travel, you can create magazines like “Adventure Travel” or “Travel Tips.”
  3. Join Group Magazines
Group magazines are collaborative and can amplify your reach. Look for group magazines related to your niche and request to join. You can also start your own group magazine and invite others to contribute.

That’s it! Start flipping content in your magazine to grow your followers.

  • Focus on growing your followers, and subsequently, your traffic will grow.
  • Have a branded magazine that is all about your own content.
  • Share also content from others in the rest of the magazines – let’s support each other!
  • Power flipping means flipping content into your own boards with lots of reflips. This triggers the algorithm to send you more traffic to your magazines.
  • Curate interesting content in your magazines.
  • What you share will have an impact on the type of followers you are getting.
  • Have magazines about other niches as well.
  • Have a catch-all magazine where you can curate anything that does not fit in your other magazines.
  • Do you have a niched-down website? If you are too niched down on Flipboard, you might find it difficult to grow. You can curate content for a broader niche where your own niched-down site would fit.
  • Apply to become a creator. See more below.

What Is the Difference Between Publisher and Creator on Flipboard?

  • Publisher: Publishers get RSS feeds into their magazines. Flipboard does not currently accept publishers, but the good news is that you don’t need to be a publisher to drive traffic to your site.
  • Creator: Creators get access to the big official Flipboard magazines and storyboards. Apply for creator status as soon as possible. It might take a while to hear back from them.

Group Magazine Etiquette

Be mindful that you’re not spamming group magazines. The less active a group magazine is, the less you should be posting there, otherwise you’ll look like you’re spamming if you flip 2-3 posts in a day.

Different magazines have different rules, but to give you an idea, the official Flipboard group magazines have a rule of not flipping more than 5 times a day.

Flipboard has been a game-changer for my blog, and it can do the same for you. Start today, set up your profile, create engaging magazines, and watch your blog traffic soar. Happy flipping!

  1. If I already have publisher status should I still apply as a creator? Iโ€™m wondering if I applied to the wrong one?

    1. Hi Lori, yes, these are two different thigns. Being a publisher gives you access to adding your RSS feed to your magazines. Becoming a creator will give you access to storyboards and the official magazines. The applications for creators take some time to be processed, so it’s best to apply as soon as possible.
