Best Time to Visit Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a popular tourist destination, and the best time to visit depends on your preferences.

The summer months of June to September are the busiest and the warmest, with average temperatures ranging from 25-30°C.
If you want to avoid the crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of May or October, when the weather is still pleasant, but the crowds are fewer.
The winter months from November to March are the least busy, and the temperatures can be quite chilly, but it’s a great time to experience the region without the crowds. However, restaurants and grocery stores are mostly closed in Cinque Terre in winter. You are better off staying in a bigger town, such as Levanto or La Spezia, and visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cinque Terre with kids as a day trip. The hiking trails are all free and train tickets are lower price in the winter.

High Season vs. Low Season: Timing Your Family Visit

The best time to visit Cinque Terre with kids is during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) when the weather is mild, and the crowds are thinner.

While the high season (summer) boasts long days and warm temperatures, it can be quite busy, making it difficult to fully enjoy the region’s charm.

The amount of time you spend in Cinque Terre depends on your interests and travel style.

If you want to explore the area thoroughly and take part in all the activities, plan to spend at least five days in Cinque Terre. This will give you ample time to hike the trails, explore the villages, and enjoy the local cuisine.
However, if you are short on time, two or three days are enough to get a taste of the region’s charm.

Personally, I recommend a minimum of three days to take in all the beauty of Cinque Terre and enjoy leisurely strolls around the small towns.

Getting to Cinque Terre

There are several ways to get to Cinque Terre, including by train, car, bus, or taxi. Here are some of the best options:

How to Get to Cinque Terre by Plane

To reach Cinque Terre by plane, you’ll need to fly into one of the nearest airports, which are Genoa, Pisa, and Florence.

We compare all airlines with this search engine to get the lowest price possible for flights. You can also set ‘Everywhere’ as destination and it gives you the cheapest flight anywhere on any given day or find out when is the lowest price to fly to a specific destination.

From there, you can take a train to La Spezia, which is the closest train station to Cinque Terre. Once in La Spezia, you can take a regional train that runs along the coast, stopping at each of the five towns of Cinque Terre.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi or a bus from the airport to La Spezia, although taking the train is often the most convenient and affordable option.

How to Get to Cinque Terre by Train

The most popular way to get to Cinque Terre is by train. The region is well-connected to major Italian cities like Milan, Florence, and Rome, and there are frequent trains that run to and from La Spezia, the gateway to Cinque Terre. From La Spezia, it’s a short train ride to any of the five villages.

Driving to Cinque Terre

If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car and drive to Cinque Terre. However, note that the roads are narrow and winding, and there are cliffs underneath with limited space for a single car to pass in certain areas. On top of that, parking is limited.

It’s best to park your car outside the region in La Spezia or in Levanto and take the train or ferry to the villages.

Note that while you can reach all villages by car, cars are not allowed within the village limits. You can park your car at the entrance of the villages and then explore them on foot.

Taking a Bus or Taxi to Cinque Terre

Buses and taxis are available to take you to Cinque Terre, but note that they can be more expensive than other modes of transportation.

How to Get Around Cinque Terre

If you want to explore the stunning coastal villages of Cinque Terre, you can opt for ferries, trains, or hiking trails. While all three options are great ways to experience Cinque Terre’s beauty, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Tips

Corniglia is the only village that is not reachable by ferry, so you’ll need to take the train to get there. However, the other four villages are easily accessible by ferry, allowing you to enjoy the picturesque coastline from the water. Take the bus from the train station to the center, otherwise it’s 383 steps!
On the other hand, hiking trails are a great way to get some exercise while taking in the breathtaking scenery. The trails vary in difficulty, so be sure to choose one that suits your fitness level. More details further below.

By Ferry in Cinque Terre

One of the best ways to get around Cinque Terre with kids is by ferry. It’s a scenic and enjoyable way to see the villages from the sea, and there are several ferry options available throughout the day.

As you can see, Corniglia is the only village that you cannot reach by ferry – you’ll need a train for that one.

If you’re journeying with your kids, going by ferry is a hassle-free and comfortable option. It enables you to dodge long hikes, and it is ideal for the little ones. What’s more, the ferry ride itself is a thrilling experience for children as they can view the vibrant villages from the water and even spot marine creatures.

Kids under 5 travel for free. Kids 6-11 years old pay reduced rate.
You can buy a day ticket and essentially treat the ferry like a hop on hop off boat. The timetable is created in a way that you can easily see all four villages that are accessible from water in one day. Corniglia has no harbor and is only accessible by tain.

By Train in Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre villages are connected by a local train line, Cinque Terre Express Trains, that runs frequently throughout the day. This is the easiest and most convenient way to travel between the villages, as the trains are often on time (but not always), affordable, and provide stunning views of the coast.

You have to validate your ticket or your Cinque Terre card before entering the train!
The Cinque Terre Express trains are running every 20 minutes between the five villages and it takes about 5 minutes to get from one village to the next.

Hiking in Cinque Terre

Hiking the well-marked trails that connect the five villages is a popular activity in Cinque Terre.

The most popular trail is the 12km Blue Trail, taking around five hours to complete. Boat rides and train connections provide alternatives for those who find the trail too challenging. Spreading this trail across two or three days is a great thing to do to be able to stop in the villages, otherwise you won’t have much time to enjoy them. The first town should be Riomaggiore, as the trails are easier on that side.
The Path of Love between Riomaggiore and Manarola is the most famous part of the trail. Otherwise knows as Via dell’Amore, it has been popular as a romantic path with couples since the 20th century.
Monterosso – Vernazza – Corniglia trails require a Cinque Terre Card. The rest of the trails are free. You can find more info and buy the Cinque Terre Card online here.

By Bus in Cinque Terre (Only within Each Village)

The Cinque Terre towns are not connected to each other by bus. However, buses are running only within each village and their hamlets.

I highly recommend the bus in Corniglia from the train station to the center of the village. The alternative is climbing up 383 steps, it’s a no-brainer 🙂

Driving in Cinque Terre (and Why It’s a Bad Idea)

While most of the villages in the area are predominantly pedestrian-only zones, there are a few exceptions. For instance, the central part of Corniglia and certain areas of Monterosso can be accessed by car. You can park your car at the entrance of the villages and then explore them on foot.

It’s worth noting that all villages can be reached by car, but cars are not permitted within the village limits to preserve their traditional charm and maintain a calm environment for visitors to explore on foot.

Driving around Cinque Terre with kids is not ideal, as the roads are winding and narrow, and parking is difficult. Not to mention you’ll be missing all the fun of the ferry and the train ride!

Monterosso is hands down the best town in Cinque Terre for families looking for a hassle-free vacation. Monterosso Al Mare is the flattest of the Cinque Terre towns, making it easy to explore with children.

But Monterosso Al Mare isn’t just convenient – it’s also stunningly beautiful. Best Areas to Stay for Budget Travelers

If you’re traveling on a budget, consider staying in Corniglia, which is more affordable than the other villages. However, Corniglia has no harbor. It is only reachable by train and then you need to take the shuttle from the train station to the center of the village or climb up 383 steps – which is definitely not practical with kids.

For budget travelers, there are several affordable accommodation options around Cinque Terre as well.

One great option is Levanto, a picturesque town located just a short train ride away from Cinque Terre. Levanto offers a range of affordable hotels, guest rooms and apartments, as well as a beautiful beach and charming town center with a playground.

Another option is La Spezia, which is located just a short train ride away from Cinque Terre and offers a range of budget-friendly accommodation options. If you’re traveling with a lot of luggage, you’ll appreciate the ease of getting around in La Spezia. Plus, you can easily hop on a train or boat to visit the nearby towns – all while keeping your budget in check. So, while La Spezia may not have the postcard-perfect charm of the other towns, it offers a practical and affordable base for your Cinque Terre adventure.

Monterosso: The Best Cinque Terre Village for Families

Looking for a family-friendly destination in Cinque Terre that has it all? Look no further than Monterosso, the flattest of the Cinque Terre villages!

Monterosso is also the most kids-frindly Cinque Terre village. It is a top pick for families with young kids, thanks to its (mostly) sandy beaches and the playgrounds (one in the Old Town and one in the New Town).

As the only village with an extensive beachfront, the beaches of Monterosso offer the perfect place for little ones to splash around and have lots of fun in the sun. Monterosso has the only long sandy beaches in the area, complete with chair and umbrella rentals, as well as kayak rentals to explore the stunning coastline. It’s a nice place with beautiful fishing boats along the beach.

Due to its elevated location, the village enjoys cooler temperatures, making it a pleasant escape during the hot summer months. For those looking for a quieter and more laid-back experience in Cinque Terre, Corniglia is definitely worth a visit.

You can only visit Corniglia by train and there are 383 steps to get from the Corniglia train station to the center of the village – luckily, there is a bus too! You can buy tickets on the bus directly or it is free with the Cinque Terre Card.

A nice long stretch of beach in the New Town is a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming. Vernazza Beach

Vernazza Beach is a small beach that is perfect for dipping your feet in the water. The beach is in the harbour area.

Manarola

Manarola has a rocky harbor in one of the most popular Cinque Terre towns, and while it may not be ideal for swimming, it offers stunning views of the town and the surrounding cliffs. Plus it’s fun to watch people jumping in the water!

Guvano Beach

Guvano is the secluded beach of Corniglia and it is only recommended for very adventurous families. It is hard to reach, not organized and nudist. However, if these don’t discourage you, you’re going to enjoy an amazing beach!

7. Visiting the Churches and Historical Sites of Cinque Terre

For those interested in history and culture, Cinque Terre has several churches and buildings that are worth a visit.

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Monterosso al Mare is a beautiful example of Ligurian Gothic architecture.

The fascinating 17th century Confraternita dei Neri Mortis et Orationis oratory, located a short walk from the main square next to San Giovanni Battista church, features a two-tone Baroque-style facade with black and white stripes. The interior is decorated with skulls and skeletons. The Brotherhood of the Blacks provided burials for the less fortunate in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, wearing black robes, cords, hoods, and collars as masks to protect themselves from decomposition’s smell. Personally, I found this one the most intriguing!

Perched atop a hill in Vernazza, Castello Doria is a medieval fortress that offers panoramic views of the Ligurian Coast.
